We start when you’re ready to reach out. No referral is necessary. You can email me, phone me, or submit a contact form. I will respond to you within one business day, though likely sooner. If you phone, please leave a voicemail with your name and number, as I may be with a client when you call.
When reaching out, please let me know the best way I should contact you, and whether I can leave a voicemail. This is because I would like to ensure everything remains confidential for you.
It’s then a good idea for us to have a brief phone conversation about your situation. If you’d like to book a first session at the end of our conversation, we will figure out a good time to meet, and I will email you my consent forms to review, as well as some information on using Microsoft Teams for online counselling.
I use Microsoft Teams for online counselling. You can download the Microsoft Teams app onto your desktop, laptop or mobile device. Or you can simply click the meeting link I will email you before each session, and you can join from your web browser. If using a desktop or laptop computer, you will need to ensure you have a webcam and microphone.
You will also ideally want a strong, high speed internet connection to help ensure we’re not disrupted during the session by connection difficulties. If we’re cut off by connection issues, I will usually call you by phone as a fallback.
I want to ensure your confidentiality is protected during our sessions. Please let me know if you have any concerns about being able to find a private space for yourself in your residence where you won’t be disturbed.
While I recommend video counselling online as safer and more effective, in certain circumstances I may be willing and able to do telephone counselling with you.
Individual sessions are 50 minutes long, and couples session are 80 minutes long. I will email you a link to the session in advance. If you have any difficulty with the link, please let me know right away so that I can help you get online successfully.
We can meet weekly or biweekly, depending on your situation, or at a frequency we work out together. The number of sessions you need will depend on your situation, and we will work out together what is appropriate for your therapy goals.
I want to get to talking right away about your situation. In our first session, however, I may also need to spend some time reviewing the informed consent forms with you, assessing your safety if necessary, learning some background information about you, and getting a sense of your therapy goals.
If you have any questions or concerns about me or this process, that you haven’t already asked, this is a good time to address those too.
